Proper names in the Bible have more importance then we may imagine.
A proper name is a word or a combination of words by which a person, place, thing, or any object of thought can be identified, called or known.
A name can also indicate a specific position, relationship or function.
In the Bible a proper name has to do with a person's natural character, the outward form or appearance, the traits that form the individual's nature.
Throughout the Bible, when a person's character or position changes, their consciousness expands, requiring their name to be changed to reflect their new character or position.
In Genesis 17, God appeared to Abram when he was ninety-nine years young and told him that he was going to make him the father of not one but many nations.
Genesis 17:5 tlb, "What's more God told him, 'I am changing your name. It is no longer Abram' (Exalted Father) but Abraham' (Father Of Nations) - for this is what you will be.'"
In Genesis 17:15 & 16 tlb, "Then God added, 'Regarding Sari your wife - her name is no longer "Sari" but 'Sarah" (Princess), and I will bless her and give you a son from her...'"
In these instances both Abraham and Sarah became conscious of the fact that they were about to be blessed by God and in the process their consciousness was expanded and their names were changed.
In Genesis 35:10 tlb, after Jacob fled his brother Esau and arrived at Bethel, God appeared, "...and God said to him, 'You shall no longer be called Jacob (Grabber), but Israel, (One Who Prevails With God).'"
Acts 9:1-31, Saul was on his way to raise hell or so he thought. He ended up doing just the opposite. Saul's change was so profound it not only changed the course of the Christian faith, it also changed the course of civilization.
Saul's name was changed after being led to the house of Ananias because he was blinded by the "Bright Light," his encounter with Jesus. He came into the knowledge of the Lord. In the process his conscious was expanded, he was baptizes and his name was changed to Paul (Little).
In 2 Samuel 12:24&25 tlb, "Then David (Beloved) comforted Bathsheba (Seventh Daughter) and when he slept with her, she conceived and gave birth to a son and named him Solomon (Peace)..." "And the Lord loved the baby and sent congratulations and blessings through Nathan (He Has Given) the prophet." David nicknamed the baby Jedidiah (Beloved Of Jehovah) because of the Lord's interest.
As you can see, names in the Bible are given as a way of distinguishing people; they mean something. When we give someone our name it should indicate unity or closeness as in marriage or a father-son relationship.
From Genesis to Revelation, names have a defining character.
Here are a few more examples:
Abigail - Cause of Joy
Bashemath - Perfumed
Candace - Queen
Dorcas - A Gazelle
Elizabeth - Worshiper of God
Ester - A Star
Eve - Life
Adam - Taken Out of the Red Earth
Aaron - Enlightened
Amos - One with a Burden
Barak - Thunder
Cephas - Rock
Daniel - God Is My Judge
As you can see, these names either represent a state of consciousness or an invisible quality.
But there is only one name that is, "Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come." Ephesians 1:21 kjv
