Most people think of goals as being some words on a piece of paper, or as ideas you have in your head of things that you want. I am going to suggest you look at goals in a different way. I am suggesting that you look at goals as if they were newly born little infants. And your job as one of the parents of that new little bundle of possibility is first to keep it alive and then to protect it, nurture it, and help it grow.
The act of creation, which is fundamental to achieving a goal, requires vast amounts of attention, energy and focus. Although a goal may be easy to create, often they come into being while you are in an excited state of mind. Parenting the goal and raising it to a reality is where all of the real work comes into play. Anyone can get excited and make a little goal, but few have a plan in place on how to ensure that goal survives and grows into reality.
If you are fortunate enough to recognize that you have a goal, the first thing should be to be grateful. Most of the people, in most of the world, live lives were they are told what they can do, what is possible for them. For many in this world, a goal is the creation of someone else and it is handed down to them to raise it as if it were their own.
Just like the human body or any other living creature, a goal must be made of systems. Living systems are in place to maintain the "living "condition. The same holds true for goals. What systems do you have in place to support the "living condition" of your goals?
Life as we know it is also heavily dependent upon the interaction of cycles. Atmospheric and seasonal cycles allow us to have a food supply. Planetary cycles allow us to create the tool of time. Numerous biological systems have supported our creation of medicine. Financial cycles allow us to capture the value of our time and contributions and trade it for someone else's time and contribution. Motorized vehicles, computer calculations and human reproduction are all slaves, too, and partners of cycles. What cycles do you have in place to support the life of your goals?
All system and cycles require fuel. Whether it's regular gas for you old car, JP5 for a jet plane, sunlight for plants, gravitational pull and the Earth's thermal fluctuation for the ocean, animals for some animals, or emotion for human feelings, all of these things need fuel. What is the quality and source of the fuel for your goals?
All goals are vision of something, or a condition that does not currently exist. All goals require that you manage things now to create things in the future . . . that sounds pretty philosophical doesn't it? What philosophies do you have in place to allow for the reality for your goal in the future? You see, when you imagine your goals as being "something of your creation that is alive and dependent upon you for survival, you just might give it the attention it deserves. Parenting future realties is hard work.
