Choosing baby shower invitations is a big deal. It sets the mood for the shower, alerting each invited guest as to what to expect when they arrive and what is expected of them, too. Invitations should be purchased with the mother kept in mind, since she is the guest of honor. Today, many fathers also participate in the baby shower, so including him in the invitation may also be important. The following are some of the most important things to keep in mind when choosing baby shower invitations.

Choose the Theme

What type of baby shower is this going to be? There are several options. Consider a formal event. Here, you may have a large number of people coming and be planning to rent a larger space. In this case, choose baby shower invitations that have a formal look to them, perhaps elegant wording and a nice, heavy card stock. If you want guests to enjoy a themed party, be sure that this theme is played out in the actual baby shower invitations, too. For example, perhaps you will be using a color theme, pink or blue. The invitation also should reflect this theme by being pink or blue.

The surprise baby shower should have some special detailing to it. First, you may choose an invitation that directly says that the event is a surprise. Be sure to reiterate this into the actual wording on the invitation too. Since this is a big part of the event, it is highly important that the shower invitation makes it clear that the event is a surprise. Many invitations are designed to offer just that.

Who Is the Shower for?

When selecting baby shower invitations, you should keep in mind the person who will be the guest of honor. There are a variety of different ways to spell this out on the invitations. (You can have them professionally printed to include this wording if you would like.)

  • A Baby Shower for Karen and Baby to Be
  • A Baby Shower for Jane and Her New Baby to Be
  • A Surprise Baby Shower to Celebrate Ann's New Baby
  • A Baby Shower for Amy and Jim's New Baby
  • A Baby Shower to Welcome Baby Jill

There are many ways that you can include information here. Be creative but personal to get the right message across.

The Date and Time of Shower

The next item on the baby shower invitations is the date and time. This information needs to be accurate, and it should give all the information needed. The date and time should be clearly displayed:

*Join us on July 2nd, 2009 at 2 pm.

Also in this section is the RSVP information. For an informal get together, you may not be concerned with this. Yet, in most cases, you need to know who is coming so you can plan accordingly. (How many chairs will you need and how many people are you feeding?) Be sure to leave enough room between the actual event and the RSVP date to meet requirements of a hall for final numbers. Provide a telephone number for guests to call.

Location

The location should be as detailed as possible. Include the street address, the name of the facility and any important landmarks, especially if you have guests coming from out of town for the baby shower. You also want to consider adding a map to aid guests in getting to the location if they don't live nearby. You can obtain a map of the region using any of the map websites online or create your own.

Additional Wording for the Perfect Baby Shower Invitations

In addition to providing all of this information, you may have special messages for the guests. Include this here. For example, you may need to include information on where the mother to be has registered. You may want to include information about bringing food (especially if the shower will be potluck).

Pulling off a successful baby shower really is defined by the information you include on the baby shower invitations. Choose invitations that make it easy to add this information in. And, plan ahead. Don't seek out invitations at the last minute or you may be limited in time.
