Wedding Photography vs. Wedding Videography
As a Cape Cod wedding photographer since 1984 (I started in 1978 in Philadelphia) I have seen a lot of changes in the video world. Back in the 1970s video coverage did start out with huge cameras and big lights due to the cameras not being good in low light. Today that has changed where most brides of the past never noticed me during the entire day. Now with smaller hand held cameras you can get many more candids when the wedding guests are not seeing you're there.
Photography started out one hundred years ago and today the cameras are also smaller and easier to handle. If you had one budget to spend, which one would you choose?
When you are thinking of the two methods to capture your wedding, there of course are differences. Photos are easily handled on a DVD. Photos have been said to be forever (actually photos from film used to fade in about 15 years). Since digital has not been around as long, who knows? If it is the same, your photos will fade. Actually, after time your photos or album will end up in a closet.
Very few brides keep their album out in their living rooms for 20 years. There is always an exception to the rule, and I know one family whose wedding I attended in the 1970s and she still has her album out for display. The biggest difference is having someone there to capture the audio of your day. Photos do not capture audio but video coverage does. If you are reading your vows that you have written to each other, can you afford to let those words fly up in the air? Can you also afford to pass up hearing your father, mother, grandfather or favorite friend not be heard? This is the choice. Audio comes along with moving pictures and does not come along with photos.
Which medium will give you the most fun after your day is over? Would a DVD with all the sights and sounds of the day be important to you or would the still images on a DVD with music be enough for you?
So which is better? That still is your choice. Talk to some friends who had video and ask them how they felt about it. Be sure when you ask them that they did pick a good videographer with a good coverage. You will not get good results with a videographer for $500.00 who will cover the 8-hour day for you. That was my price on my first video wedding. I could not have produced the sample video I have on my site for the wedding at the Popponesset Inn back in 1996.
If you are interested ask a videographer if you could speak to a client of his to get their views on their importance after the fact. I always ask my video clients a question of the level of artistry between a 0 to 10. I always like to work with levels of 8, 9 and 10 who want something totally unique. I have done a few 10 weddings and I prefer to work this way.
